<ab n="59.0" corresp="#x-59.0">This explains the next page and its pictures. It shows when and how the native people advised their children on how to live. The pictures run in order in four sections, as follows.</ab>
<ab n="59.1" corresp="#x-59.1">First section. Here the parents correct their children by giving them good advice, when the children are three years old. At each meal they gave them half a tortilla.</ab>
   <ab n="59.1k" corresp="#x-59.1k">1. Three years old. 2. The boy's father. 3. The boy. 4. Half a tortilla. 5. The girl's mother. 6. Half a tortilla. 7. A girl three years old.</ab>

<ab n="59.3" corresp="#x-59.3">Third section. At five, the parents kept their children busy with work for their bodies. They gave them light loads of firewood to carry, and small bundles to take to the tianguis, the market. They began to teach girls of this age how to hold the spindle and distaff to spin. Ration: one tortilla.</ab>

<ab n="59.4" corresp="#x-59.4">Fourth section. At six, the parents trained their children in work that would be of some use to them. The boys went to the tianguis, the markets, to pick up the grains of maize spilled on the ground, and beans and other scraps that traders had dropped. The girls were set to spinning and other useful tasks. That way, from then on, these tasks would fill their time and they would not be idle. This kept them from the bad habits that idleness usually brings. At each meal the boys got a tortilla and a half.</ab>

<ab n="60.0" corresp="#x-60.0">This explains the next page and its pictures. It shows when and how the native people of Mexico taught and corrected their children, to keep them from all idleness, so that they would always work hard and keep busy with useful things. The pictures run in order in four sections, explained here one by one.</ab>
<ab n="60.1" corresp="#x-60.1">First section. At seven, fathers put their sons to work, giving them the nets they fished with. Mothers trained their daughters in spinning and gave them good advice, so that they would always work hard, keep busy and never be idle. At each meal the children got a tortilla and a half.</ab>
<ab n="60.1k" corresp="#x-60.1k">1. These seven blue dots mean seven years. 2. The father of the boys in this row. 3. A tortilla and a half. 4. A boy of seven, whose father is teaching him to fish with the net he holds. 5. The mother of the girls in this row. 6. A tortilla and a half. 7. A girl of seven, whose mother is teaching her to spin.</ab>
<ab n="60.2" corresp="#x-60.2">Second section. At eight, the parents punished their children by frightening them with maguey spines: if they were careless or disobeyed their parents, they would be punished with the spines. So the boys cried from fear, as the pictures in this section show. Their fixed ration of food was a tortilla and a half.</ab>
<ab n="60.2k" corresp="#x-60.2k">8. These eight dots mean eight years. 9. The father of the boys in this row. 10. A tortilla and a half. 11. A boy of eight. Her mother threatens her with maguey spines and warns her not to be a good-for-nothing. 15. Maguey spines.</ab>
<ab n="60.3" corresp="#x-60.3">Third section. At nine, if children would not be corrected and rebelled against their parents, the parents punished them with the maguey spines. They tied a boy hand and foot, stripped naked, and stuck the spines into his back and body. They pricked the girls' hands with the spines, as the third section shows. Their ration was a tortilla and a half.</ab>
<ab n="60.3k" corresp="#x-60.3k">17. These nine dots mean nine years. 18. A tortilla and a half. 19. The father of the boys in this row. 20. A boy of nine. Her mother punishes her for carelessness by pricking her hands with spines.</ab>
<ab n="60.4" corresp="#x-60.4">Fourth section. At ten, if children rebelled, the parents punished them too, beating them with sticks and threatening them in other ways, as the fourth section shows. Their fixed ration was a tortilla and a half.</ab>

<ab n="61.1" corresp="#x-61.1">This explains the first section of the next page. If a boy or girl of eleven would not take correction from words, the parents punished them by making them breathe chili smoke through the nose. It was a harsh and cruel torment. It was meant to make them mend their ways, so that they would not grow up wicked and idle wanderers but would spend their time on useful things. Boys of this age got their bread, which is tortillas, by a fixed measure: only a tortilla and a half at each meal, so that they would not learn to be greedy eaters.</ab>

Her mother is punishing her and is about to hold her in the chili smoke. 8. A tortilla and a half. 9. Chili smoke.</ab>
<ab n="61.2" corresp="#x-61.2">Section two. If a boy or girl of twelve would not take correction or advice from the parents, the father took the boy, tied him hand and foot, stripped him naked and laid him on the ground in a damp, wet place. He left him there a whole day, so that the punishment would make him mend his ways and fear. The mother made a girl of this age work at night, before daybreak, sweeping the house and the street, and kept her always busy with work. Here too the parents gave them a fixed amount to eat.</ab>
