A young wife learns to run the house

Xenophon, Oeconomicus (Household Management), chapters 7–9 (about 360 BCE), in the edition of E. C. Marchant (Oxford, 1900) · about 360 BCE; the exact year is not known

7.7

Τὰ δ’ ἄλλα, ἔφην ἐγώ, ὦ Ἰσχόμαχε, αὐτὸς ἐπαίδευσας τὴν γυναῖκα ὥστε ἱκανὴν εἶναι ὧν προσήκει ἐπιμελεῖσθαι; Οὐ μὰ Δί’, ἔφη ὁ Ἰσχόμαχος, οὐ πρίν γε καὶ ἔθυσα καὶ ηὐξάμην ἐμέ τε τυγχάνειν διδάσκοντα καὶ ἐκείνην μανθάνουσαν τὰ βέλτιστα ἀμφοτέροις ἡμῖν. Οὐκοῦν, ἔφην ἐγώ, καὶ ἡ γυνή σοι συνέθυε καὶ συνηύχετο ταὐτὰ ταῦτα;

And in other things, Ischomachus, I said, did you yourself train your wife to be capable of looking after what falls to her? No, by Zeus, Ischomachus said, not before I had sacrificed and prayed that I might succeed in teaching, and she in learning what is best for both of us. Then, I said, did your wife also sacrifice with you and pray for these same things?

9.1

And what then? Did your wife seem to you, I said, Ischomachus, to give any kind of heed to the things you were so eager to teach? Why, she promised to take care of it and was plainly very pleased, as if she had found a way out of helplessness, and she begged me, as soon as possible, to set things in order as I had said.
