Vistula
The great river that flows north to the Baltic, Wisle in Old English, whose mouth marked the border of the Ests' land.
Today: Vistula River, Poland
A voyage to the north: Ohthere and Wulfstan tell King Alfred
Ohthere’s and Wulfstan’s voyages, from the Old English Orosius, in Henry Sweet’s An Anglo-Saxon Reader (Oxford, 1894) · later ninth century, in King Alfred’s reign
W5
And Weonodland wæs ús ealne weg on stēorbord oð Wīslemūðan.
And Weonodland was all the way on our starboard side, to the mouth of the Wisle.
W8
And þonne benimð Wīsle Ilfing hire naman, and ligeð of þǣm męre west and norð on sǽ; for ðȳ hit man hæt/ Wīslemūða.
And then the Wisle takes the Ilfing’s name away, and flows from the lake west and north into the sea; that is why it is called Wislemuða.
